Gamers' gimmick as a rom-com involves the awkward interactions between several characters who are gaming addicts and have varying degrees of misunderstandings about the relationships with one another. Suppose the comedy wasn't my cup of tea as I felt mostly indifferent to it throughout the show's run and while the characters had some depth to them with their gaming interests and their perceptions of others, I didn't really give much of a hoot about them thanks to my response to the comedy. Maybe it's only because this isn't my cup of tea as a comedy, but I felt mostly ho-hum toward Gamers and your mileage may vary with how you warm up to its comedy.

Amusing, fun--will it pan out? Those, basically, were the only notes I took while watching episode one of Gamers. A strange yet intriguing dream-come-true situation is set up: the hottest girl in school comes to you, an insignificant person, and asks you to join a club that she is forming. Things don't quite go as you had hoped, however, as you find that there will be a number of other members, and each has a strange quirk--like the guy who solves puzzles because he's afflicted by amnesia. It's too soon to say what will become of this; will a serious and intriguing plot come together, or will the series as a whole be little more than the so-so jokes we have seen so far? Will the subject of how much video gaming is enough, and whether it is a healthy pursuit, ever come up? I doubt it. Like a number of shows this season, episode one of Gamers leaves me feeling that this show is worth watching more of, but I doubt if it will ever be brilliant. It looks like each of the five members will get an episode which explores their past and how they got interested in video gaming and joined the club. Episode two did not exactly thrill me. It seemed kind of dull as the jokes fell flat and the message seemed to be to reassure video game otaku that they have nothing to be ashamed of and are awesome in their own way. But it didn't really get deep enough for that message to be very convincing. Last updated Sunday, August 06 2017. Created Friday, July 21 2017. |
