(Two episodes watched):

Well, my first thoughts on this show are that it has a clever premise with lots of potential, but so far the signs I'm getting don't suggest that the potential will be fully exploited. As for the premise, just make a crazy juxtaposition of two popular anime themes--here, dragons and maids--and people will naturally wonder how in the world the writer might piece together some sort of believable and entertaining story that contains both of them. Thus, interest is generated, which is what the first episode of a new anime needs to do. The question is whether the story will be very deep; ideally, it might include intriguing human emotions about how to adapt to a bizarre situation, how totally different characters get to like each other and live together, etc. Or it might go no farther than using the strange premise as an excuse for simple jokes about dragons and maids. Unfortunately, the latter seems to be the case here. In episode one the jokes seemed a touch above average, but in episode two I don't think I laughed even once. This feels like a show which is based on a 4-Koma manga, i.e, a newspaper style comic strip with lots of weak jokes but little beyond that. Ms. Kobayashi herself seems likeable, but I don't see any sign of her growing and developing, instead it looks like she will just serve as the straight-man in a weak comedy. With the humor this unexceptional, this show really needed a fairly deep plot, but nothing of the sort seems to be forthcoming. The implication that several similar dragon-maids will be added to the cast as the show progresses doesn't encourage me; I'd rather the basic characters get developed than have more shallow ones added. Quality rather than quantity, you might say. This was a show which required two episodes for me to decide whether it was worth watching, but it seems that the premise itself was about the only noteworthy thing about it, and after the initial interest it generates wears off, there is little to like. It feels like another anime about which the one thing that most sticks in my mind is the wasted potential.
