Aoharu x Kikanjuu
(One episode watched):|
I had collected the fansubs of the first episodes of half a dozen new anime, and the one I watched first was this one, since anything with the word 'machinegun' in it ought to be full of action and excitement. And I found it to be thoroughly disappointing. There's no reason why simulated combat with paintball or BB guns can't be as exciting to watch as the real thing, but this show seems to make the usual mistake (or take the usual shortcut) of assuming that the game itself will excite and entrance the viewer and there's no need to develop interesting characters that he/she can identify with. Hotaru has one major quirk--she's a cross-dresser--and has a religious devotion to fighting evil, but otherwise has little or no personality. She is so agile that she can essentially ignore the laws of physics, but this wasn't played as a joke and instead seemed outrageous. I found the premise to be hard to take seriously and it was likewise hard to suspend disbelief. The plot just seems very tired and unremarkable; I never felt thrilled or excited. If the jokes are going to be lame and the characters 2D, what's needed will be a realistic and intriguing look at how this Survival Game is played--but I get no hint that that is going to happen, instead it is totally unrealistic, with the usual nonsense about people being able to dodge bullets in flight. Basically, the characters are not cool, the game is not interesting, and the jokes are not funny--and that's three strikes. You would think that these sort of games would be a premise that is easy to make a fun anime about, but apparently not, because I have yet to see one.
