Both the basic premise and character designs of Magic Kaito--this show has got to come from the same person as Meitantei Conan--seemed old and tired to me. It feels like a mish-mash of stereotypical elements: a flamboyant thief, a protagonist with an amazing skill, a great mystery which he must solve, a girlfriend who can't be let in on his secret identity, her father as an incompetent detective--was there anything original about this show? What's more, it was neither funny nor did I like the main character. The show also seemed too silly for me; it almost seemed like a children's show. It was completely implausible as well ('Hey! I've got a collapsible hang glider hidden under my cape--or else I just summoned it out of thin air'). The explanations of the magic tricks, such as they were, were uninteresting--there's no way that mere mirrors could really cause a man to become invisible for all intents and purposes. So, the show didn't fall into any of the three categories which might make it worth watching: it was not funny, it was not 'cool', and it was not interesting. Since I do not care about Kaito himself, I can't care whether his father was murdered or not. Expecting me to be entertained by Magic Kaito is like expecting me to be entertained by watching reruns of old shows, and I have much better things to devote my time to.
