Hikaru is given a phone call asking him to appear in the Japan/China/Korea Junior's Tournament but he finds out he will have to take part in a preliminary tournament to choose Japan's three contestants. Upon discussing this with Akira, he discovers that Akira has already been chosen for the tournament and will not be taking place in the preliminaries. Hikaru then decides not to visit Akira's Go Salon until he takes his place on the team with Akira. That may be tougher than originally planned, as not only does Hikaru have to battle with old friends for one of two coveted spots, but he may have a new challenger, in a promising player from the Kansai Go Institute.

This bonus treat for Hikaru no Go fans continues the plot of the TV anime featuring Hikaru choosing to take part in an upcoming major Go competition where a team of young pro players from Japan get to take on teams from Korea and China. All the regular elements you would expect of the series are retained here with Hikaru going through challenges in the tournament that he feels he needs to overcome to prove his worth to rival Akira and the introduction of a new character with skills in Go that rival Hikaru's and test him out for the preliminaries. The TV special concludes at the finale of the preliminary rounds to determine who would compete for Team Japan. Other than the tournament, this special doesn't really add much new to the Hikaru no Go mythos, as it pretty much serves as another opportunity for fans to reconnect with their favorite characters from the series doing what they are known for and that is testing their skills and challenging themselves in Go. This is a definite watch for Hikaru no Go fans. But if you are expecting anything new from this special, you may be disappointed to watch through this.
