This second prequel OVA series to Legend of the Galactic Heroes offers up more stories on Reinhard and Kircheis' time rising in the ranks of the Galactic Empire, as well as additional focus on Yang Wenli's achievements with the Free Planets Alliance. The focus on Reinhard adds nothing new to the story of LoGH besides exploring the usual corruption that the high class of the Empire have for themselves and Reinhard's desire to quickly rise in the ranks of the military to obtain power. However, Yang's back story provides some additional depth to his character as Spiral Labyrinth explores how he earned his moniker as "The Hero of El Facil" and explores another prominent element to the history of the Alliance in a team of influential military leaders through Yang's research he conducts as part of a military assignment. This OVA retains the animation style that has been present in the LoGH franchise throughout the past decade it was animated, though having smoother details, more vibrant colors and occasions of CG animation used for computer screens and some animated spaceship sequences. Spiral Labyrinth also retains the classical music pieces that are a prominent part of the franchise, along with having the beautiful new opening song Story of Time. Beyond this, there isn't really much else for me to say. If you enjoyed the LoGH franchise and have already watched through the first Gaiden OVA, then Spiral Labyrinth will be a definite watch for you.
