This part of the Legend of the Galactic Heroes franchise is mostly focused on fleshing out Reinhard and Kircheis' rise in the military of the Galactic Empire while having some serious hurdles to overcome from a corrupt military superior trying to off them during their first mission to military officers being opportunists to rise in the ranks of the military. The series sheds some more light on the difficult challenges faced by those who don't conform to the high ideals of the Empire before Reinhard's takeover of the government, the propaganda being fed to those enrolled in the Empire's military schools and the oppressive and corrupt methods done by those among the royal elite to snuff out those who they see as being in their class. Schenkopp does get some focus as well in the final half of the series in the title's major arc involving two major battles that take place in the Iserlohn Corridor as he butts head with a former comrade who betrayed the Free Planets Alliance and returned to the Empire. The visuals to this OAV are on par with what you found in later episodes of the original anime and it retains the orchestral music score. The Gaiden OAV series does have a couple rough spots as there were a few contrived developments that come about with the mini-stories, particularly with how the conclusion to the second Iserlohn battle is resolved. Still, this is a worthwhile expansion to the LotGH mythos which sheds some more light on Kircheis and Reinhard's challenging and quick climb up the ranks of the Empire's military.
