Appleseed XIII
This second remake of Appleseed (1988) appears to try offering an extended take on exploring the world of the series and fleshing out Deunan's character as she contemplates things with her life within Olympus and attempting to explore more to the world of the series within 13 episodes. However, the storytelling for it feels rather sloppy between the attempts of character development making Deunan less combat proficient compared to prior incarnations of her character in anime form and said character development not really leading anywhere, on top of the highly blatant attempts for the series to paint its story developments being comparable to the Greek myth of the Twelve Labors of Hercules. The series starts off with episodic stories followed by an ongoing story arc in its second half, but these stories tend to wildly vary in their quality. The CG animation offers slick action sequences for mecha and gun-action, as well as highly-detailed robotic and scenery designs. Human character renderings can vary with their quality, as up-close facial movement still looks a bit off and are missing some anatomical details in close shots. In short, I'm rather indifferent on Appleseed XIII as a whole between Deunan's character taking a hit in her competency in combat, the blatant symbolism it tries to portray, and some of the rough aspects of CG animation used for the series. I'm not sure if I'd be pressed to see this again anytime soon.
