Yagyu Jubei was Japan's greatest swordsman. His skill was legendary, but the one enemy he couldn't conquer was death. Before he died, though, he gave his disciple hope - there would be a successor, and this deserving person would receive all the power and skill of Yagyu Jubei, along with the Lovely Eyepatch.

After 300 years of searching, the disciple finds Jiyu Nanohana, a rather ordinary girl who has just moved to a new town and started going to a new school. As if going to a new school weren't stressful enough, now Jiyu is told that she is heir to the legendary talents of Yagyu Jubei. And she will have to put those talents to good use and stop the assassins of the rival clan!

Jubei-Chan is a sort of parody of samurai-action titles as its gimmick focuses on middle schooler Jiyu Nanohana being able to transform into the legendary samurai, Yagyu Jubei, whenever she puts on a heart-shaped eyepatch and combating rival clans attempting to defeat Jubei to avenge their defeat to her centuries earlier. The humor of the series is supposed to come from the samurai fighting Jubei taking their fights ultra-seriously and the exaggerated mannerisms they have as a result, as well as some of the exaggerated character types of school anime that make up Jiyu's classmates. However like many comedy titles, I'm mostly indifferent to the humor it had to offer up.

The one storyline that did make this somewhat memorable for me was a side plot about Jiyu's father attempting to connect with his daughter following his wife's death and feeling guilt for not being with her during the tragic event due to his busy job as a writer. The side plot is a relatable one for any widowed parent to connect with, especially as Jiyu's father is largely unaware of the conflicts that his daughter and her alter-ego are currently having with rival samurai clans.

Outside of this storyline though, whether or not you warm to Jubei-chan will largely depend on how well you warm to the show's comedy. I'm sure it may have appeal to some folks, but your mileage will likely vary on whether or not you warm up to its humor.

Rent Stretch [series:227#628]
I was kind of leery of ordering Jubei-Chan, having read a number of reviews which described it as "not for most people", "weird", "quirky" and "goofy". But from what I could tell, this sounded like the sort of "acquired taste" that might just be meant for me, and I placed the order. After watching the first two episodes, it was clear that Jubei-Chan definitely looked like a winner! Having read more than one synopsis helped me keep track of what was going on as the charachters were introduced and the basic premise of the series was unveiled. Just as the reviews had predicted, swordfights were well choreographed and went quickly. You might describe this as a "comedy-action" series, since the humor definitely has priority. I was initially a bit displeased by the charachter designs--boxtop illustrations which I had assumed must be of charachters in SD mode turned out to be their normal appearance. It gradually dawned on me that playing with the charachter designs was one unique way in which the show's makers allowed themselves to have some fun with their creation. There is no standard style, rather it appears that the more important a charachter is, the better drawn he or she is (some of them even complain about how poorly illustrated they are!). Crude, even grotesque drawings of as yet unidentified persons appear now and then--who's that ugly Samurai hanging around after the closing credits? But Jubei herself looks fine, and even if you don't appreciate the humorous charachter designs, that's a small price to pay in exchange for the quality and quantity of the comedy. I wish I could put my finger on exactly how it differs from most anime, but this show has a unique sense of humor--one critic attributed it largely to excellent "timing" of the jokes. This show is just plain funnier than most! I remember reading that it had the same director as Kodomo no Omocha. Sometimes I watch an entire series without noticing a single particularly clever bit of dialogue which I could use as my trademark "favorite line", but in the case of Jubei-Chan I had an entire page full of candidates. The reviews I read beforehand warned that this unique style of humor didn't translate easily, and much of it would be lost if the series wasn't watched in subtitled form. Too bad there are also a number of great sight gags which are liable to slip past you while you are reading the subs. The story came to a near-perfect ending--there was a touch of sadness, but also the feeling that it had to be this way. The only thing that seemed missing to me was a more complete explanation of who those three girls who had been hanging around on the outskirts of the plotline were. I initially assigned this one a Buy rating, but since I haven't gotten around to rewatching it (a requirement for expensive anime) I've demoted it to Rent.

My favorite line: "I won the prefecturals three years running and the nationals last year... but I'm not bragging about it or anything"

I don't know how you cannot love this series. If you are a love hina fan you could do plenty worse than to check out this (short) series. The animation at times is something that you'd expect out of ninja scroll and the comedy is excellent. (bust jokes aside) If you are looking for a light hearted and enjoyable semi action series, this one would be a must see. (the dub is useless)

I liked this series. Lately (fall 2001), I've been looking for things to cheer me up, and this fits the bill. The first half is extremely wacky, the overall message is very positive, and it ends on a nice upbeat note. Even the bust-size jokes die down after the first few episodes. There was a lot of really off-the wall stuff, like the guy with the shirt that constantly changes, and the straaaaange little "tags" where this sort of pumpkin-headed guy wobbles in a landscape for a few seconds after each episode. The music is very catchy and fun, especially the closing theme. And I love Koinosuke!

Toward the end, they even manage to get in some drama, but it never really disturbs the light-as-a-feather tone. I really liked the revelation of the true secret of the Lovely Eyepatch. It has kept me grinning lately, which means it's a success in my book!

This anime was ok, I didn't mind the bust size humor too much though the way that they did it was rather lame, if you've seen the series you know what I'm talking about, most series jave bust size humor however the way they chose to do it in the series was extremely tasteless.
I don't see anything wrong with seeing it with kids of say .. 10 and up because in reality those kids know a lot more then we give the credit for. The way that she changes ito the samurai is cool too and setsa very good backdrop to the series. Which is itself is fairly good if not tasteful.

I love this anime! It's just excellent! It has some ...err... crude humor, but it really is funny. The plot in the story is very well done!! One wish I do have is that they would have put more story with Jubei the samurai, and I am sure you will feel the same. I think the"unrefined" are great, and soooo irritating, but the story would not be the same with out them. The lead guy is a real "WOW" factor in the story! BUY!

This is really funny! I love the main Guy charicter in this, he is so...I don't know, I just REALLY like him! Jubei is pretty cool too. There are a few things that are just repetativly gross. No Nudity though, they are just a little too interested in the bust size for my confert! I don't think it is one I would watch with kids just becouse they would probably eeewwww, about everything! It is pretty much a romance story (hints why I like it so much). But it is also a great comedy! And it has a great ending, but I wish they had made it a little more romanic at the end! But it was really good just the same!

It's a wonderfully good comedy! It is funny how every male character on the show falls in love with Jiyu Nanohana. But then again, she's also challenged to a dual by almost every one of them too. You'll definitely have a good laugh with this 13 episode TV series. Worth at least checking out!
