I guess I'm gonna be plowing through the various Votoms OVAs licensed by Sentai Filmworks from last year. Last Red Shoulder appears to be set between the events of Uoodo City and Kuumen Jungle Wars as it goes into more detail about the Red Shoulders, whose remnants partner with Chirico to attack a Secret Society compound and shows the early stages of Ypsilon and Fyana's rather complicated relationship as the former is conditioned to become the Society's tool as a Perfect Soldier to combat Chirico and the Red Shoulders. The OVA serves as a critical point in the franchise as it explores the beginnings of how Ypsilon becomes as mentally unstable as he is from his upbringing by the Society and further adds more fuel to Chirico's fighting against the Society. Definitely a worthwhile watch if you enjoyed the Votoms TV anime.

Watch Stretch [series:2050#628]
(Watch+ or Rent-)

I had thought that this would be a prequel to the original TV series, but it seems to take place during the series, in between Uoodo City and Kummen Jungle Wars. I don't think the way this one ends syncronizes very well with Pailsen Files, if I remember correctly. The makers probably regretted killing off a major character in this relatively minor Votoms segment, and chose to ignore the event later on. There was plently of all too common I-always-hit-you-always-miss combat between the four heroes and numerous mecha opponents. But there was some cool animation of the Votoms maneouvering about, and once Ypsilon got into the fight things got more interesting. It was kind of poignant how Fyana hoped to instil a little humanity into Ypsilon, with little success. Some trouble was taken to give Chiricos's comrades a bit of personality. All-in-all, this one was never brilliant but did a credible job of telling a fairly interesting story. Any fan of the Votoms genre would want to see this at least once.
