Besides all that, the president of the Astral group (Itsuki), was a whiny coward... too much and overdone for character in his position. Even though he shaped up more near the end, I still found it quite annoying. The animation wasn't bad though. If you're looking for a decent "magic" series, then I'd move on to greener pastures. Okay, was it me or did I lose track of the plot in various places? Maybe I got a bad copy of the series or something. To start, this series wasn't that great and barely made it as a 'watch'. Sure there were some interesting characters but they really didn't do much to help me overcome the series. Now, i could have sworn that in episode 1, Adilisia was introduced during a school scene where she and Honami were argueing near the end. By the conversation, it seemed Adilisia already was acquainted with Itsuki since she called out his name. However, in episode 2, it seems they meet for the first time and he's bewildered as to who she was.||||||||

(All episodes watched): Rental Magica was a show which narrowly held my interest. Not a whole lot of particularly thrilling or original things struck me about the first episode. A magician brokerage, a rival firm, spells, taboos--so what else is new? The solution to the opening case didn't seem very surprising or intriguing to me. It's almost like I'm supposed to think "this is cool because magic is involved!"--whereas in fact the genre of magic has been practically done to death (and didn't excite me all that much to begin with). There wasn't much comedy; plus, the cases were confusing and since I didn't have a great desire to pay close attention I had a hard time keeping track of just what was going on. I did have an amusing moment when Itsuki (Jun Fukuyama) got excited and started screaming, and I recognized his voice from his previous role as Keita in Inukami!. It took awhile but Rental Magica shaped up and I'm glad I didn't quit altogether. Episode eight, the obligatory hotspring episode, was amusing and a pleasant surprise. It's nice when more-or-less serious shows take a break and go for the humor; I think it contributes to character development. The magical battles remained confusing and unexciting; the "magical technology" (for lack of a better term) was bewildering. With time the characters became fairly interesting and likeable ("Addie" is my favorite). I wish "ghost girl" got to play a leading role in an episode or two! Actually, considering this is a 24 episode series, I don't recall all that much about the characters; maybe more character development was called for, or maybe I've forgotten the info already. Episode 18 was fun, largely because two relatively minor characters got a story to themselves. Rental Magica did have a certain charm to it, and I don't regret watching. But if you are not seriously intrigued by magic, you could probably do better. Last updated Tuesday, April 08 2008. Created Saturday, October 13 2007. |
