Hikaru no Go does for the game of GO and what Eyeshield 21 does for Football, this series spins a story of a genius gambler named Akagi and his different Mahjong game adventures. And it mostly works. With an animation style reminiscent of Fantastic Children (which means that it is pretty strange) this series tells a story about Akagi (who is pretty strange and whacked out) while he plays an incredibly complicated tile game called Mahjong. (Hey, I play tournament level bridge, so I am used to games with complicated names and move combinations .. and I can barely follow the Mahjong game play in this story.... ) So what can I say? I really dislike the animation style of this series, really like the complexity and darkness of the main character and am completely bewildered by the game play. If you like dark and complex drama stories (with that special touch of the morose,) then you might enjoy this series. This is a very adult series and has been rated unusually HIGH in many of the anime review circles. There is also another mahjong anime series called Saki Mahjong, but with its cute characters, high school mahjong club theme and sweet storyline, it should be considered Akagi-ultralite.
