On a cold and stormy night, Shigeru Akagi crawled out of the ocean, stumbled into a dingy waterfront Mahjong parlor and into a rough Mahjong game. Nangu was heavily in debt and had been offered a chance to gamble away his debts by the yakusa. And if he did not win, they had made sure that his life insurance policy would more than cover what he owed them. That evening’s tiles had not been kind to Nangu and with nothing left to loose, he decided to take a chance and let the thirteen-year-old Akagi play in his place. The events of that evening are still quietly spoken about and of how a rank-beginner beat the yakusa rep (or professional) player. It was that night that the legend of Akagi - the genius or monster of the Mahjong game - was born.

In a manner similar to what Hikaru no Go does for the game of GO and what Eyeshield 21 does for Football, this series spins a story of a genius gambler named Akagi and his different Mahjong game adventures. And it mostly works.

With an animation style reminiscent of Fantastic Children (which means that it is pretty strange) this series tells a story about Akagi (who is pretty strange and whacked out) while he plays an incredibly complicated tile game called Mahjong. (Hey, I play tournament level bridge, so I am used to games with complicated names and move combinations .. and I can barely follow the Mahjong game play in this story.... )

So what can I say? I really dislike the animation style of this series, really like the complexity and darkness of the main character and am completely bewildered by the game play. If you like dark and complex drama stories (with that special touch of the morose,) then you might enjoy this series.

This is a very adult series and has been rated unusually HIGH in many of the anime review circles.

There is also another mahjong anime series called Saki Mahjong, but with its cute characters, high school mahjong club theme and sweet storyline, it should be considered Akagi-ultralite.
