Only Yesterday revolves around Taeko, a single woman working a desk job in Tokyo in 1982, taking a vacation in the countryside with the family of her sister in-law. During her vacation, Taeko finds herself looking back at her time as a young schoolgirl growing up in 1966. The film flips back and forth between the two time periods with a lot of nostalgia and beautiful country scenery as Taeko sorts out her flashbacks and tries to make some tough decisions about her future.

Only Yesterday was a Ghibli work directed at young adults reflecting on their younger days as children in the form of Taeko, an office worker uncertain of her future as she goes on vacation leave from her work to sort things out while recalling minor memories from her childhood. The movie switches back and forth between past and present quite frequently as this transition is done quite smoothly. For example while adult Taeko is boarding a train, the camera moves a bit and the scene shifts to younger Taeko on the train with her family. Memories of the past which might seem little to insignificant to most people are memorable to Taeko as we see such memories as a family outing to a hot springs resort to immaturely talking about menstruation. The children behave so believably like those of their age in Only Yesterday that a young adult could think they had any of the experiences that Taeko was involved in. The artwork and character designs had a soft pastel feel to them which fit the mood of nostalgia and self-reflection for Taeko's story well enough.
However, Only Yesterday is an acquired taste due to the movie's devoted focus on Taeko's character and the movie's main target being young female adults. While this movie was written well enough for its intended audience, it might be harder for anyone else to enjoy this movie.
