Aa! Megami-sama - Sorezore no Tsubasa

After the first series, I have to say that I wasn't that enthused about the sequel. But, I felt that I should at least give it a try, so here's goes an attempt at a review. The Ah! Megami-sama manga has its share of problems, more so in recent years. Fujishima-sensei is notorious about doing retconning to suit his whim for whatever story he's currently telling. While this can be a tad frustrating (not as much as the lack of progress between Belldandy and Keiichi though), we forgive him. So the anime could be used to rectify those retconning continuity errors. Sadly, the anime writers still refuse to do so, deciding to do things their own way.

Like before, there's too much Baka Bell-chan, mostly in the begining. So she uses her powers in public a lot (and to be fair, Urd does too and Skuld does in front of a guy her age, even giving up her secret without even blinking). To be fair, Baka Belldandy lessened quite a bit once the writers went to following manga stories more closely (such as the Ninja episode). But the Belldandy I love was already gone for me. So all I could do was roll my eyes at times.

Because this series got cut short, the writers made some changes to get Hild-sama into the picture. But they changed the story of her arrival for another reason, and frankly it didn't work for me because it was forced. In the manga, contacting the Dainakaicho is required because they need her to unlock "demon code," something the kami and megami cannot do. In the anime, the problem could be resolved by Kami-sama, but they don't trust him so they are going to trust the ruler of the demon realm. Yeah, whatever. And Belldandy has another baka moment because she doesn't know Urd's mother. In the manga, she knows but just never says (at least, from what I recall).

Well, I could complain all day about what I didn't like. So instead I'll switch to some things I did like. Skuld making "Murder-kun" was a hoot for me (and an anime-only creation). I liked Sentarou-kun, though I had a problem with his immediate acceptance of Skuld and sisters being megami. I felt he should know and accept, but the way he just did it without question bothered me. I loved the Ninja story adaptation despite Hild's being in the story now. It is a shame that Fujishima-sensei dropped them as soon as the story was over in the manga and I didn't know how much I missed them until I saw the episode.

Bottom line: I'm just very disappointed with how the anime has adapted the manga. Having waited for so many years, I had such high hopes. They were dashed with the first series and continued to mostly be stomped for this second series. So whatever R1 company decides to license this, good luck because I'm not buying.
