Armed with a metal sash that straightens into a sword, lanky swordsman Van is traveling through the desert, searching for the mysterious clawed man who killed his bride. Along the way he picks up a fellow traveler: Wendy, a young girl whose town he saves from bandits by summoning a mecha with his sword. Wendy is searching for her missing older brother, whose engraved gun she carries on her back. In their mutual quest they run afoul of more bandits and villains, a mysterious woman named Carmen99, and more mecha battles a la Wild West.

26 episodes (released in 2005)

Note: Even though it looks like the title is GunxSword. It's Gun Sword. Both the OP screen and the extras confirm that. The X represents Dan's home when Von isn't using him.

I guess I can see why some folks have labeled this a Trigun ripoff. Like said series, the world of Gun Sword mixes elements of western and sci-fi with crime rampant and a mysterious male lead encountering them in his journey to find the whereabouts of a foe from his past. Only differences being that Van has a mecha at his disposal to pilot, he can form a sword via his armor instead of using a gun, his personality appears nowhere as diverse as Vash and he is out for revenge by the gist of things. The series is seemingly trying to make itself into an action-comedy mix considering Van's quirk of eating food with any condiment and seasoning in sight, as well as the seemingly over-the-top villains encountered such as the leader of a gang of thugs being overly obsessed with luck and a gentleman-like baddie able to seemingly grow his beard to ridiculous proportions. However, I couldn't find myself laughing at these moments that the show gave out and I got the feel this series was rather cookie-cutter with how it laid out its premise considering revenge-themed stories are nothing new for me to see and the introduction of mechas to the series seemingly being tossed in to appeal to fans of the genre. Here's yet another series I get via Netflix rental I will pass on.

1st episode impressions: hmm, though there really are resemblances to vash the stampede and spike spiegel, (or rather, the main character van seems to be a mashup of both of those characters) he stands pretty well as his own person and hopefully he'll develop into something completely different (totally unlike the trinity blood character Abel). likewise, this series is, as stated above, a mashup of the western genre and mecha genre but we'll see where that goes. as it stands, the series is off to a good start. a little cliche but what the hey. fighting is fluid and mecha battle isn't too bad.

TBC.

Gun X Sword is a great series that reminded me a bit of Cowboy Bebop. Probably because the main character looks like spike, but also because is has that whole "western sci-fi" feel to it. It's more western than sci-fi than Cowboy Bebop and it has more of a fantastic element. (Though, it's not as good as Cowboy Bebop, the art looks similar). Some of the bad guys are a little over the top, but the overall story is actually good. I recommend!

It's pretty good, but as it is almost a direct rip off of Trigun I can't give it a buy rating. Von and Dan are a good Man/Mecha pair but they are the only unique feature of the planet Endless Illusion.

Now that I'm in the Claw part of the storyline, it's really interesting.

The OP is very weird with a bunch of grunting men for 30 seconds then becomes a traditional OP. And the 3rd disk introduces another love interest. Too bad it's not a harem.

With a story line similar to Tri-Gun or Genadier (both of which are at a <buy> rating), the first episode of the fan-sub release hints as being a fun (comedic) and violent story of adventure and strangeness with two miss-matched and different-aged main characters. There is a bit of a loli-edge, as Wendy attempts to entice or enlist Van’s help by offering to be his wife, but he is too much of a spacy loner to take her offer seriously, and he is also too much of gentleman to ignore her heartfelt desires to find her older brother.

The opponents that confront Van and Wendy are all a bit over-blown and over-egotistic, but they all prove themselves to be bad-boyz deserving of being taken down and trampled by the strange forces that Van summons to protect the righteous and innocents.

This series is well worth the watch, (and will probably prove itself to rank at a <buy> rating.)

The sixth episode has been released as a fan-sub!!
