Rent | Libra City is a place divided into two distinct parts by a bridged river. On one side is the affluent Upper; on the other is the ghetto Outside. Monsters of the human variety can be found in Outside, but true humanoid monsters (yokai) have started to appear as well. Some of these are the artificial works of a crazed scientist and his experiments, but three others are real ones: Bem, Bela, and Belo. All can transform to pass as human and, to one degree or another, all seek to become human, with Bem's philosophy being that saving humans will bring them closer to that goal. That brings him into occasional contact with Sonia Summers, a crusading police detective who has been exiled to Outside because of rubbing her superiors the wrong way. Though their contacts are rocky at first, she gradually comes to understand that he is not the threat that he looks like. Meanwhile Bela and Belo also search for acceptance in their own ways. |
