More or less, Burn Up is a buddy-cop action-comedy with our trio of heroines dealing with a local slavery ring when one of them gets abducted by the traders. There is a fair amount of fan service compliments of our girls being in stages of undress at points in the OVA and each gal taking on a stock archetype typical of anime characters from the time period. It's short enough to be a time killer of a rent, but offers little compelling enough for a rewatch.

Burn Up W). There is a bit of profanity as well. The plot is simple, but I wouldn't say insultingly simplistic. There's just enough of a story to justify the hot body-armor and heavy firepower that appears in the climax after a half-hour or so. The first time I watched it, I missed who that girl who tried to betray the heroines was, and why. The tape had a listed length of 50 minutes, but a good part of that was a "production portfolio" consisting of sketches drawn by the artists. In it's defense, I suppose you could say that this is not a bad tape to watch if you don't want to have to do much thinking. Yuka, Reimi and Maki are likeable, in more ways than one, and the bad guys ultimately get what they deserve. Good enough for me! You could say this has become one of my treasured "guilty pleasure" anime collection. Half an hour is certainly no major committment of time, and sometimes I want a little story that opens and closes in such a brief manner. The animation isn't bad for a 1991 production, as the chase scene at the start makes clear. The closing song is fun ("Burn Up My Heart!"), and in fact I even ordered my own copy of the DVD version in order to rip the song. Catch Maki and Reimi's montage at the Cute Girls with Guns page! The jacket that the Burn Up! VHS tape came in sports the teasers "Danger! Highly Inflamable!", "Body Armor Never Looked So Good!!" and "Big Crimes. Big Busts". Indeed, the police department certainly has allocated a lot of money towards developing sexy female SWAT-team uniforms. Other than the standard shower scene, however, the three girls keep some semblance of clothing on throughout the one-of-a-kind OVA (5 years later it was revived as ||||||||
