Satoko Kusagakure is a yound Kunoichi (female Ninja) who unwisely joined a group a fellow Ninja trainees who rebelled against their harsh training in the mountains of Japan and fled to the big city. Hungry and adrift, she meets Konoha Koga, a low ranked teenage assassin. Though Satoko hasn't gotten very good at fighting and killing, some of her others skills would be of great use to Konoha, who takes Satoko in.

(One episode watched):

This show immediately reminded me of Baby, Please Kill Me!, which I watched to the end. The opening scene is animated in a 1980s-ish manner, with relatively simple character designs and lots of freeze frames, but the rest is more conventional. It soon became clear that this is basically a comedy, but things didn't exactly 'click' for me. The jokes were not terribly funny--I recall just one that made me LOL, namely what Konoha says when she sees what Satoko is capable of. This ability, probably based on a legend that has come together to explain the seemingly inexplicable abilities of first rate Ninjas, can only be explained here as magic. Another problem was that Konoha is not a nice person--not just unemotional as she goes about her job, but outright cruel at times. Characters like two Ninja sent to execute Satoko for her desertion are swiftly dealt with by Konoha; you sort of get the impression that she thinks nothing of killing people even when nobody is paying her to do so (I don't hate her, though). Balancing murder and comedy can't be easy, and here the balance seemed off. Satoko is sort of fun, however. So, I did not get many laughs out of this show, and it's not clear if any sort of interesting plot will come together or if this will be the sort of show made by converting newspaper grade cartoons into animation. I guess I will watch episode two, however.
