Amagami-san Chi no Enmusubi
(One episode watched):
If it wasn't such a pain to look them all up, I would create a keyword for shows in which in episode one the male protagonist for some reason walks into a room filled with near nude girls, or well endowed girls trip and fall on top of him, giving him a free (and in theory blameless) grope. The makers of anime have gotten the message that if you just do that, your show will have a good number of viewers even if the plot and characters stink to high heaven. Amagami- quickly revealed itself to be a member of this subset. Somehow the three girls do not hear Uryu knocking and shouting, and expose themselves while in their underwear (their fault, not his!). “I guess I'll go wash my face” Uryu says at one point, and you just know that somehow he'll wind up in a bawdy situation with one of the girls, the only question is exactly how it will happen. When he finds the fiery Yuna asleep without any sort of blanket and must choose whether to do her a favor or not, I was thinking “Don't be an idiot! Leave her alone!” because nothing good could possibly come of it. And the joke about Yuna scattering salt to purify a spot wasn't all that funny even the first time it ran. This show did not seem funny in the least, but it was probably never really supposed to be. In addition to the initial walk-in situation, each of the three girls separately winds up in a scandalous position with him somehow. Take your pick of a prospective wife, Uryu: Yae (20 years old) has a mature body but is actually childishly naïve and permissive. Asahi (14) serves as the lolicon option. And Yuna (17) is combative and argumentative—a challenge, but shouldn't such a girl be taught her place? Everything begins on such a wrong foot that I couldn't believe that it could possibly be salvaged. As if he wasn't unwelcome enough already, Uryu taunts the girls about their faith. Then a miracle of sorts occurs. An effort is made to give the characters and their beliefs some depth, but it wasn't all that moving and I had already decided whether I was going to watch. Is Uryu supposed to father the next priest, or become one himself? I had thought it was the former, but the ANN synopsis suggests the latter and it would be more interesting, in part because he is completely unqualified for the job and would need to undergo a major transformation of his personality. But who are we kidding? Cheap erotic humor always trumps engaging philosophical development.
