On a whim, the illustrious demon realm magician Romberg once adopted a human orphan, Ike. He taught Ike all of his own skills and left him with a set of advice: never reveal that he is actually human (he wears a skull-face mask), and never mention the ancient civilization that once existed in this land and which fascinated Romberg. Today Ike is the commander of the 7th 'undying' brigade of Demon Lord Dairokuten's army, and has caught Dairokuten's attention by taking the fortress city of Arsenam which had previously seemed impregnable. But drawing attention might be the last thing Ike needs, what with his secret. Also, a human slave, Satie, has stumbled upon his secret and Ike cannot bring himself to kill her.

(Two episodes watched):

As I have said countless times, the basic test for whether the first episode of a new show has succeeded is whether it leaves me with any questions that I feel I need answers to. And at the end of episode one of this show, I couldn't really say for certain that it had. The basic question is whether Ike will be able to keep his human ancestry a secret. But I couldn't really bring myself to care all that much. Perhaps we just haven't gotten to know him well enough for the stakes to be very high. He's human, and as such feels some 'guilt' for all the people who get killed by his army, and can't bring himself to silence Satie. But I still wasn't particularly intrigued by him. Why does he fight for the demon realm? And politics within the realm seem so simplistic that I doubt if any truly engaging scheming and counter-scheming will ever occur. It is mentioned that Ike might even be the next Demon Lord if he keeps a lid on his secret, but that too did not excite me since Ike himself doesn't either. And then there's this 'ancient civilization', but so far about all we know about it is that they must have been good at some sort of magic. The joke of the bumbling maid who knows Ike's secret came closer to making me groan than laugh. So, maybe I'll watch a second episode to see if things get any more interesting, but then maybe I won't.

As it worked out I did watch a second episode and it didn't get much more interesting. This is largely another 'wouldn't it be awesome if hot girls only wanted to be your favorite and you had the power to thrash anyone you didn't like?' sort of show. That is, even high ranking female generals want to be in bed with you (though what would/did happen there isn't shown), and thus are in a way subordinate to you. The most base, carnal way of pleasing male viewers, but one that is guaranteed to be fairly successful. Despite the innuendo this felt like a show written for children. Ike thwarts a human surprise attack, but we are told that not a single human got killed in what had seemed a good sized battle. The message I got was that this show was never going to get serious about war and politics and I might as well dump it. I can confidently predict that we will never get to know Ike much better than we already have, since drama and plot are not what this show is relying on to attract viewers.
