Utena Hiiragi is an fervent admirer of the three magical girls, 'Tres Magia', who defend her city against the evil organization Enormita. In fact, she is 'totally crazy about anything to do with magical girls', especially their ability to transform. One day, much to her surprise, a black creature, 'Venalita', which she immediately recognizes as a 'mascot character' appears to her. Utena is offered the chance to become a transforming magical warrior herself--but what wasn't made clear is that Venalita is recruiting fighters for Enormita, not Tres Magia.

This was a show which got off to a promising start but then quickly turned ugly. Utena is a very average, unremarkable girl who gets little notice at school--which, it turns out, is just the sort of person that would make an excellent villain, according to Venalita (maybe that's why they always lose--because they are average rather than exceptional). The premise seemed amusing, and early on I could sympathize with Utena, but soon things went off the rails. The first sign of trouble was the kinky costume, with small bat-like wings, which Utena transforms into, and the nudity that is displayed as she does so. The blackmailing tactic that Venalita used to force Utena to fight for Enormita wasn't funny at all, and worst was the erotic joy Utena experiences while torturing the helpless girls of Tres Magia. She was clearly not the sort of person who one could sympathize with after all. That, and the sorry excuse she used to justify her actions made clear that she was a pervert rather than a poor girl forced to fight for evil against her will. The (implied) tentacle rape, the groping, the ass whipping, all made clear that comedy was not what this show planned to use to attract viewers. It all pretty well trashed the premise for me. I must admit to being curious what the stories behind the two evil magical girls that will join Utena are, but there is no way that any anime that is as tone deaf to comedy and makes such lurid use of crotch views can possibly be worth watching. Basically, a funny premise but otherwise not funny at all.
