Reisalin 'Ryza' Stout lives in the ordinary village of Rasenboden on the ordinary island of Kurken. 'Tradition' strongly discourages anyone from leaving or entering the island, but Ryza is bored with her humdrum life and consequently one day she proposes to her friends Tao and Lent that they embark on an adventure. They borrow a small boat and cross the 'lake' to explore the land on the other side.

Atelier Ryza: Tokoyami no Joō to Himitsu no Kakurega

Something seemed to be missing from episode one; I didn't watch all of it, because it turned out to be somewhat longer than the usual 23 minutes and I ran out of time. Perhaps it was a lack of a big problem that needs to be solved. Ryza's boredom is about the biggest problem that needs fixing so far. She and her friends encounter strange 'monsters' on the mainland, including 'Pixies' that look like aliens from outer space. But I sensed no sign that they, or any other sort of monster, would be the main antagonist. Ryza has some personality but could use more. Violating tradition doesn't seem to be all that big a deal; a tongue-lashing is about the worst thing that is liable to happen if they get caught. Moritz Brennan controls all or most of the water on the island (but isn't that a lake, not a sea, that surrounds it?), but the people don't seem to hate him or be thinking of rebellion. Life is pretty simple and peaceful on Kurken, so what will the main problem be? One bit that made some sense was when Ryza, Tao (a bookworm) and Lent (a fighter) all implore newcomer Empel, an Alchemist, and his bodyguard Lila to teach them something different. Why did they go adventuring on the one day when a stranger was being allowed to come to the island? I wonder how well thought-out the plot of this show will be. It looks like a sizable cast is coming together. I never did finish the first episode, so my assessment may be flawed, but in terms of time I fell far behind during the Summer season and decided not to watch this.
