Two sleepless teenagers find kinship as they escape to their school's astronomy observatory. Unable to sleep at night, Ganta Nakami is cranky in class and unpopular with his classmates. He discovers that the school observatory, once used by the now-defunct astronomy club, may be the perfect place for a nap—but he's not alone. Fellow insomniac Isaki Magari is willing to share the observatory with Nakami, and a friendship between the two begins as they bond over the most unlikely of things.

There are instances where the more straightforward premises can do enough to slither into your heart and appreciate what is offered up for a title. That was the feeling I got watching through Insomniacs After School throughout its 13-episode run focused on teen insomniacs Nakami and Magiri learning to gradually appreciate their time together and participating in their school's astronomy club. The series is mainly focused on exploring both their characters to show the challenges they face in their personal lives contributing to their insomnia and undergoing gradual changes in their characters due to the time they spend together. This slice-of-life focus on our main pairing creates a level of genuine believability that helps viewers easily connect with and relate with their characters as the experiences they undergo are quite subdued and never devolve into melodramatics throughout the title's 13-episode run, even with some moments of light drama exploring the emotional hardships occasionally faced by both lead characters. It may not have the most visually impressive presentation for the year thus far compared to titles like Vinland Saga Season 2 or Tengoku Dai Makyō, but the strong character focus and relateability more than makes up for this aesthetic shortcoming. If you are looking for a slice-of-life romance anime to dabble into, I'd give a strong recommendation to check out Insomniacs After School.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:4649#628]

This struck me as a charming, interesting, fun show. We get a quick introduction to an extended cast and a more detailed one to the two main characters, Nakami and Magiri. Everybody seems realistic and likable and the jokes are not bad. I don't know if the depiction of insomnia will be realistic enough to take seriously, or if it is just a stunt to get a premise rolling, but for now I'm OK with it. The thought occured to me that Nakami ought to look for a job as a night watchman, since he absolutely cannot sleep at night but is sometimes drowsy during the day. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed episode one of this show.

The two teens need an excuse to use the old observatory, so they revive the defunct astronomy club. And they take the club seriously, too. It's a near perfect calling for people who are only alert and awake at night. In episode three they call upon the now graduated former head of the old astronomy club, and convince her that they are serious. Their insomnia is not a problem at night, apparently. The two drift towards romance in episode four. While this show started with something novel--the insomnia--I can't help feeling that less and less attention is being paid to it and maybe it was just a stunt to jumpstart a romance between Nakami and Magiri. I get the impression that the author has never been victim of severe insomnia him- or herself. If the depiction of the malady is unconvincing, it's hard to feel sorry for the two main characters. It looks like overcoming insomnia won't be an ongoing thread, just teen romance. That makes this show somewhat less original and interesting. This is by no means a bad show--I am still watching it--just not as good as I had originally hoped.

For a good while Nakami and Magiri have been planning a party to watch a meteor shower, and it was looking like a major success, but a problem beyond their control turns up. For some reason Nakami blames himself for a factor that he had absolutely no control over, which is kind of disturbing. But he snaps right out of it and devotes himself to earning money to cover the cost of an ambitious nightitme photo shoot that he and Magiri have planned. No progress in whatever romance they have was evident in episode nine. Magiri's sister tags along on their trip as a chaperone, and we learn a few things about Magiri's past. In episode 11 we learn how Nakami developed insomnia, though I did not find it to be very convincing. But his and Magiri's romance finally gets moving.
