(Two episodes watched):

I sort of hate it when shows which were just good enough for me to struggle through them, and I thought I was finished, suddenly release another season. That's because if I had known they were going to be around 24 rather than 12 episodes long, I probably would have dropped them early in the first season. But they do have some quality, and I hate to leave a job unfinished, so I feel a nagging obligation to keep watching. Such a show is this second season of Rikei-. I remember that even during season one this show struggled to make me laugh. How many jokes can be squeezed out of this premise (which is sort of a joke itself)? It seemed that the supply was already drying up even during season one. And episode one of S2 didn't seem very funny either. I was annoyed by the sexual objectification of the fellow researcher (a saliva expert); that seemed to scream that this show was running low on fresh ideas. I sort of wish the makers had been content with one season, and had switched their effort to a new show with a new gag premise.

I watched episode two, but it seemed like more of a biology lesson than an attempt to make me laugh. I learned a good deal about how Oxytocin and other human hormones function, but I don't recall LOLing--or even coming anywhere near doing so--even once. Instead I found myself thinking about how to a large extent 'love' seems to actually be the result of chemicals telling us what to do rather than conscious choices that we make ourselves. Maybe I will compromise and not watch this show immediately but save it so that I can at some point in the future if the urge to do so ever strikes me.
