Miko Yotsura has a problem: she has begun seeing ghoulish apparitions, and they keep coming. Like the classic ones in Japanese horror films, they ask her if she can see them, and she knows that if she says 'yes' a horrific fate will quickly befall her. So, she pretends to see nothing and ignores them--but this can't go on forever.

Mieruko-chan's whole gimmick is its titular character, Miko, able to see ghosts and trying to ignore them to prevent inconveniencing those close to her, this serving as the comedy element to the series with the means Miko often goes through to prevent any spirits from sensing that she can see them. While having its potential, the series does have a few major issues that keep me from wanting to care more about it. First, the fanservice occasionally present throughout the show's run felt unnecessary beyond efforts to pander to its audience having some suggestive camera shots, scenes of undressing, and an extended bath scene shown at points. Second, the series doesn't really go anywhere with further developing its story and characters as Miko still makes an effort to ignore the spirits where possible and those close to her largely don't have much to show for depth beyond whatever character types they personify. Third, the horror element with the grotesque appearance of the various spirits is somewhat ruined by the anime's annoying habit of having spirits emit some sort of purplish haze that detracts from whatever horrifying features each spirit had to make them seem horrifying to audiences. In short, the series is a bit messy with what it offers up with both its horror and comedy elements hence I'm iffy on whether or not to see it again anytime soon.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:4375#628]
(Three episodes watched):

'Is this primarily comedy or horror?', I asked myself while watching episode one. Because there hadn't been any serious laughs, yet it didn't exactly feel like the show was trying all that hard to frighten me either. If anything, it seemed to be concentrating most on fanservice, which didn't seem to suggest a horror premise. It's hard to believe that anyone could hide their shock as they are repeatedly taken by surprise by terrifying things well enough to convince them that they haven't seen them--and also hard to believe that these situations aren't being used better as jokes. Nevertheless, we have gotten to know the quiet, unemotional Miko and she has a very big problem on her hands and I wonder how she can possibly solve it. It seems that she and two other girls--her well-endowed friend Hana and the gruff Yuria Niguredou will team up to deal with these paranormal creatures, and I am curious to see where things go. But it will need to either get funnier or have an intriguing plot (or both) in order to hold my interest.

Episode two made it clear that comedy rather than horror is indeed the top priority. Ghosts show up in all sorts of unlikely places and somehow Miko manages to remain calm and carry on. But this primary gag that the whole show is built on is already getting tiresome. And there is little sign of any sort of ongoing plot coming together; Miko and Hana notice Yuria again, but that's about all that happens. Is Yuria some sort of teenage exorcist? There's definitely a good deal of fan service, though. We do learn that not all ghosts are bad, however; one of them (or was that just a morbid-looking human?) helps out an abandoned kitten. But I think I will probably dispense with this show. On the one hand I'm frustrated by the lack of any sign that Miko's problem may be solved someday, and on the other it isn't terribly funny. It basically just has one joke and we see countless variations on it.
