The heart of Duke of Death and His Maid are its titular characters of focus with their chemistry making for the highlight of the series between the Duke's sheepish personality and Alice getting joy out of teasing him with her attractive looks in spite of the potential risk due to the Duke's curse. The series also devotes time to exploring how the two connected with one another and helps add more to the genuine developments of their relationship. Outside of focusing on their relationship, Duke of Death also dabbles more into the Duke's issues with family and dabbling into the mystery involving the witch responsible for the Duke's curse. While the series does take time into dabbling into these elements and introduces several characters from the Duke's family and the witches who frequently interact with our two leads, the series does lack a proper conclusion as its manga source material was ongoing at the time of its airing. But with a second season in development and the manga having since concluded, this raises the possibility of the full series potentially being adapted. Also a fair warning, the series is animated with 3DCG and does have its rough moments in regards of animation and rendering of the characters. Anyone not a fan of this recent trend with animating titles in this style may not find this series to be their cup of tea. But if you can tolerate the 3DCG, this is a decent rom-com with supernatural elements involving the chemistry of our two leads and dabbling into the causes surrounding the Duke's curse.

The very simple character designs (which nevertheless seemed familiar somehow) here initially turned me off, but with time they ceased to bug me as I got into this unusual story. I hope there will be some sort of a longterm plot to this, and maybe the curse be undone altogether, rather than just mildly kinky bits. I felt that I got to know the Duke fairly well and could empathize with him, while Alice remains mysterious, probably intentionally. Maybe she feels sorry for the Duke and is trying to inject a little tension into his otherwise lonely and boring life; or maybe the idea is just to turn teenage boy viewers on. Or both. Whatever the case may be, this initially seemed interesting and I decided to watch episode two as well. But my enthusiasm quickly fell off. There doesn't seem to be much of a story here--like, will any attempt be made to find the witch who cursed the Duke, and lift the curse? I can't help feeling that instead Alice's jiggly boobs are intended as the main attraction for viewers, and that may be as sophisticated as this show ever gets. Last updated Friday, October 01 2021.
