In Fujiwara, where the skies are bright and the seas glisten, Sakuta Azusagawa is in his second year of high school. His blissful days with his girlfriend and upperclassman, Mai Sakurajima, are interrupted with the appearance of his first crush, Shoko Makinohara. For reasons unknown, he encounters two Shokos: one in middle school and another who has become an adult. As Sakuta finds himself helplessly living with Shoko, the adult Shoko leads him around by the nose, causing a huge rift in his relationship with Mai. In the midst of all this, he discovers that the middle school Shoko is suffering from a grave illness and his scar begins to throb.

This film sequel to Bunny Girl Senpai provides more fleshing out about Shoko, Sakuta's childhood friend who randomly appeared to him at points during the TV series, as Sakuta gets dragged into resolving a paranormal problem involving her that forces him into making a rather cruel choice once he understands more about the circumstances with Shoko's Adolescence Syndrome. The circumstances test Mai and Sakuta's relationship with the decision that the latter finds himself having to make, and one that isn't as easy to come to compared to prior cases of Adolescence Syndrome he took on from the TV series. This gives the film perhaps the heaviest drama to be found within the Rascal series up to this point, and rather effective drama considering the situation. The pseudo-scientific situation for Shoko's situation make come off feeling nonsensical, but the pathos resulting from it still makes for the strongest storytelling within the series thus far. If you enjoyed the TV anime of Bunny Girl Senpai, Dreaming Girl is definitely worth checking out.
