Neku (his first name is all he can remember about himself) suddenly finds himself in downtown Tokyo. Yet somehow this isn't Tokyo, because people cannot see or hear him and walk right through him. And strange walls box him in to a limited area of the city. Then he gets a text message: "Reach 104. You have 60 minutes. Fail, and face erasure".

(Three episodes watched):

Well, episode one quickly grabbed my attention by plunging us into this bizarre situation along with Neku. He seems to be forced to take part in a deadly game run by some mysterious and powerful organization, whose people (who sometimes appear before the players) are known as Shinigami/Reapers. But, as is often the case, there's something different about Neku, in that he cannot remember what happened to him to place him in this situation (and of course he turns out to be very good at fighting the creatures, known as 'Noise', which attempt to prevent him from accomplishing his missions). He meets some other people who are playing this game, including Shiki Misaki, a girl he partners with since you need a partner to stand any chance of winning. You also need to completely trust your partner and not be negative, for some reason. But while this show quickly grabbed my attention, with time I became frustrated and dissatisfied with the amount of answers we were getting to obvious questions. How did Shiki and Beat and Rhyme wind up in this game? Who runs it? What happens to those who are 'erased'? The characters could at least make it clear that they don't know the answers. I was still not convinced that the story as a whole would be all that good, but episode one was good enough to make me want to watch episode two. We learn the basic secret of this bizarre game in episode two (though in retrospect we might have guessed it from the titles that the 'referees' hold): the players have died and are competing for a chance at resurrection, apparently for the amusement of the Shinigami. Or maybe God wants people who weren't positive thinkers to learn their lesson and will give them a second try if they do. But while it makes some sense, this premise didn't thrill me. The good deeds that a player must perform are pretty simple and superficial (like Shiki psychically persuading two girls who have had a misunderstanding to make up). And why would being good at taking out 'Noise' be rewarded with a second life? The fights don't impress me much--you just focus on some animal-like attacker and vaporize it with some force you now hold. As might be expected, it's much like a video game, and apparently God likes people who are good at them. So, the premise doesn't make all that much sense after all. In episode three Neku and Shiki seem to have met the conditions for resurrection, but as is often the case they find that the goalposts have been moved. But I was not eager to start over and would rather that things had gone smoothly and this series had wrapped up after a mere three episodes.
