I had snagged up the English dub for this and got the "honor" of listening to the British accents used by several of the major characters. Anyway, this series is focused on either Kotetsu getting in some sort of predicament with fan service (the instances involving bathing where she's nude and nosebleeds from male characters) or dealing with a syndicate member trying to kill her off. It's rather barebones for a plot as not much is revealed over the mentioned syndicate and there isn't a proper ending, though we do get some fleshing out of Kotetsu to learn how she acquired her honed sword-fighting skills. Guess this is yet another rather forgettable VHS-only title release from the 1990s that I've come across.

I was lucky enough to be able to rent this for a dollar, and for that price it wasn't a bad way to pass an hour. Some humor, a rather engaging main character, and some decent fight scenes. Yes, there's a good deal of nudity, but I guess I've become hardened to that by now--and of course, it will be an attraction for some people. I'm actually a little disappointed that there aren't more episodes. At least the story ended at a decent stopping point. By the way, I saw the subtitled version and so missed the pleasure(?) of those cheesy British accents. It was rather amusing that nearly every character in this show looked like someone from another series. The main character looks like female Ranma, Miho looks like Belldandy (probably deliberately since she has the same voice actress), Mikado looks like Bolcan from Orphen, and one other character looks like Kaoru from Rurouni Kenshin. The last two are probably coincidence, since both of those series came out after this one, but it's still funny. Bottom line: Not a must-see, but if you want a short, entertaining bit of action, you could certainly do worse. Last updated Wednesday, August 07 2002. Created Wednesday, August 07 2002. |

Kotetsu became undeservidly popular because of its oft-nude female lead's uncanny resemblence to Girl-Ranma from Ranma 1/2. This forgettable 2 part series, directed by Yuji Moriyama features a young swordswoman's adventures in Tokyo. Facing off with street hoods, dopplegangers, spell throwers, and tree-women (I think), Linn Suzuki lives an exciting life. Unfortunately, good character designs, OK animation, and an interesting and unique opening theme are wasted on a story that can't seem to keep itself out of the gutter. Lurching along as merely a vehicle to get it's female leads out of their clothing as often as possible, the fan service is so obvious it's painful. Kotetsu almost plays as a show exclusively for horny Ranma 1/2 fanboys. A dub featuring annoying British accents doesn't help, although it does provide us with such inspired lines as, "Time...to make LOVE." Poetry. Overall, there really isn't much to say about Kotetsu. A brief ending looks suspiciously like a cancelled series, uand understandably. Character designs an animation are overshadowed by fan service and Adventure of Kotetsu ought to be called "Adventure of KoT&A." Still, it's easy on the eyes, and there are some moments of actual humor, so if you ca watch it for free, by all means check it out, but don't shell out money for it. 6-13-02 Last updated Tuesday, July 02 2002.
