19-year old women Fubuki, Rin, Mafuyu, and Nayuta all hope to become famous comedians someday. Mafuyu in particular was inspired when as a child she watched a standup comedy act. While she hasn't made much of a name for herself yet, the fact that her own sister has already gained considerable success in the line of work motivates her to keep trying.

If I was to choose one word to summarize my impressions of episode one of Maesetsu!, I think that word would be confusion. The basics are quite clear--these girls want to make it as comedians--but I am left wondering where this is going. Will the premise of the entire series be that Mafuyu just can't give up on a bad routine that always falls flat, and keeps trying to fix it when she should just give up on it and start fresh? So much time and attention was allotted to this one gag that that outcome seems possible. Will Mafuyu and Fubuki be the two main characters or will everyone get an equal share of the anime airtime? For a show about comedians, the jokes aren't exactly LOL funny--I don't 'get' a lot of them. At one point in episode two the four girls are performing, and it seemed to me that their act was quite possibly a total flop--but then the audience starts applauding, and it turns out the act is a success. Indeed, the thought occurred to me that I was finding the ED sequence to be more entertaining than the remainder of the episode(!). This story seems to be moving very slowly; and with the humor as weak as it is some sort of plot will definitely be needed. I sort of wish some sort of serious problem that these girls must overcome had been revealed, because episodes one and two hardly left me feeling excited. Maybe it is too ordinary (in the sense that the obstacles these girls face are perfectly realistic and common ones), too 'slice-of-life'. Another problem is that the girls are drawn in such a kawaii manner that I was surprised to learn they are 19 years old. They look like elementary schoolers. I feel sorry for this show, because it is trying out an unusual premise, but ultimately it has got to deliver some sort of significant entertainment, and so far it isn't.
