Human armed forces proved virtually useless against 'Pillars', bizarre gigantic creatures that sprout from the seas and threaten the shores. Not even nuclear weapons could stop them. World leaders were at their wit's end when they were surprised by the appearance of a person who claimed to be the God Odin. Odin had apparently taken pity on mankind and while he would not vanquish the Pillars altogether, he would provide weaponry that would be reasonably effective against them. He preferred that cute girls employ it, though. The most capable female fighters are known as the 'Named', one of whom is Claudia Buford (radio call sign: Schwertzleite). She is transferred to Japan, but fears that she is a source of deadly bad luck. The reason: whoever supports her tends to wind up dead.

Oh my God--another show that I can't help bursting out laughing at when I'm supposed to be taking it seriously. For some reason these girls fly WWII vintage aircraft (The God Odin provided them) whose machine guns are more effective than atomic bombs. There must be a sizable anime sub-genre all about teenage girls employing historic military technology, whether it be planes, tanks or ships. These are human girls, not Goddesses or anything like that, they just have some sort of magical talent that Odin has recognized. I had mixed feelings about this show; the divine intervention angle was sort of intriguing, and it is sort of fun, despite being ridiculous, to watch these girls take on the Pillars in fluid 3D animation. It doesn't make much sense--how do these girls in piston engined aircraft stay ahead of Pillar fighters when supersonic jets could not? If conventional warplanes are useless, why not just have the Named and Valkyries attack alone? I had thought that Claudia's fear that she was the 'Grim Reaper' might be an ongoing problem, but it is pretty much resolved in the (47 minute) episode one. And it was pretty feeble to begin with: the 'bad luck' other pilots experience is obviously the inevitable result of them hurling themselves against an opponent that they simply cannot defeat. It seems pretty clear that now that we have switched from suicidal missions flown by traditional male pilots to cute girls, nobody is going to get killed anymore and therefore there is little danger or reason for excitement. I wonder if this show should have either been a dramatic, realistic one, with genuine risk involved, or should have just gone out-and-out comedy, but is trying to be both. The story gets kind of disjointed towards the end; at one point we cut from a desperate battle to the four girls all safely aboard their flying aircraft carrier without any explanation. Minutes later one of them jumps from a plane in flight, falls a good distance, then gives a Pillar a hack with a sword and lands casually on her feet(!). Her plane is perfectly OK (of course) because it lands softly in the branches of the giant tree that major Pillars transform into when they are killed (please don't ask me why that might be). I guess it's much easier to write a story if you don't have to worry about what's possible and what isn't. The mission the girls fly in episode two makes no sense at all and there's no way it would be possible in real life (You can't really fly a plane through glass windows and their metal frames and just shrug it off). This show is sort of amusing and fun but I can't help wondering if it has any idea where it is going or if any sort of credible plot will develop. The Pillars make no sense either. Where did they come from? Are they intelligent? Where do they get their power? Is it just 'magic'? It's hard to get excited when the opposition is so bizarre. I sense no sign that the show will delve at all into the significance of Norse deities intervening in life. It looks like an array of additional Valkyries flying an assortment of famous fighters will appear eventually. But that seems to be about all this show has going for it and I am getting weary of this. It sort of seems like this show cannot decide whether it wants to be a comedy or be serious. The girls spend a good deal of episode three goofing off when they are supposed to be on an assignment, then the episode tries to get dramatic as an injured serviceman in a hospital dies in their presence. The contrast feels jarring and inappropriate. Claudia has an audience with a person (I thought it was a girl) who turns out to be one of the Gods; that seemed to promise something, but little came of it. Why didn't she ask him (it was a guy) why the deities didn't just snap their fingers and eradicate the Pillars? And of course the Pillars themselves make little sense; it just sort of seems that a bizarre threat was yanked out of somebody's --- because there had to be some sort of opponent.
