30 years ago, a cataclysmic event destroyed half the world in a fire and caused a mutation that created a new race of people called Burnish. Burnish are able to create and control fire. The "Burning Rescue" fire squad put out fires caused by Burnish. The new rookie of Burning Rescue is Galo, a hotheaded man who wields "Matoi-Tech," named after the "matoi" banners that Edo-period firefighting units used. Galo's encounter with Lio, the leader of a Burnish terrorist group called Mad Burnish, sets the story in motion.

Promare is mostly spectacle in depicting the typical stylish presentation and storytelling milked in many of Trigger's work that is celebrated in this film. It plays up a number of typical anime tropes with Galo your typical good-natured and hot-blooded hero who learns some shocking truths to the main conflict he and Burning Rescue are in against the pyrokinetic Burnish, and the developments are largely pretty predictable if you've seen your fair share of sci-fi and mecha titles. Plus, the film is pretty blatant about its morals about combating discrimination and achieving coexistence with those different from you, shown in the conflict between humanity and the Burnish. A good deal of the spectacle of the film is fun to see in action with the battles that unfold between Burnish and humans within mecha and the hot-blooded reactions between some characters, particularly Galo. The aesthetics of the series do have their issues such as the heavy use of CG animation not meshing well with the regular animation, particularly with mecha and the abilities of the Burnish in action. Plus, some of the music used in the film is rather repetitive in its use and pretty intrusive at a number of points in the film. But while pretty a predictable title milking Trigger's regular aesthetics, it is still an entertaining spectacle that anime fans are likely to enjoy and I'd at least recommend seeing the film at least once.
