This TV special felt more like some sort of documentary reflecting on a specific element of Japan's history before the atomic bomb dropping on Hiroshima during World War II. Mixing live-action footage and animated clips, Girls in Summer Dresses explores how Japanese middle and high school girls within Hiroshima were getting by with trying to live their lives normally in the months before the atomic bomb drop in August 1945. The TV special focuses on a few girls attending school in Hiroshima during the time period and their parents being interviewed 43 years following the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima to show how they were affected by the loss of their daughters. The special believably depicts how the girls would have lived during the era between worrying about increased American air raid attacks and resources becoming scarce in the final months of the war for the Japanese populace. The presentation isn't much to write about for animation with details being simple and colors looking rather faded, though forgivable considering this is more about the educational merit of exploring an element of history with exploring life in Japan in the final months of World War II. Those wanting to learn more about Japanese history in World War II should at least give this TV special at least a watch if it catches their interest.
