In the not-to-distant future, Hiro Ryougasaki wishes he had a cellphone so that he could play the highly popular fantasy virtual fighting game 'Shadowverse'. One day, a strange experience virtually draws him to a box in the family shed, which he is delighted to find contains just what he wanted.

This seemed like a 23-minute commercial for a present day card game which is being made more exciting by depicting it as it might be played a few years from now. It gives us an idea of how the game works, and seemed to have been intended for children. The comedy was a step above slapstick and the plot wasn't very deep either. I guessed that Hiro's strange experience and the special set of Shadowverse accessories he found had somehow placed him in a special category, higher than the vast majority of players. And that Takuma--a trouble-making Shadowverse player that Hiro takes on--was in the same category but was using his special powers for evil purposes. That's the way shows of this sort typically go. But this series didn't even go that far. There is no explanation of why Hiro's odd experience was included; he's just super good at Shadowverse, even though he's a newcomer. I had thought maybe Hiro's experience had placed him in danger somehow, but no, he loves the game and just wants to play fair and win. Takuma, on the other hand, is just an asshole and deserves to lose. I wonder if the characters are being intentionally kept 2D so that Shadowverse itself is effectively the main character. And for all the high tech, Shadowverse didn't seem all that dynamic to me. It was largely a matter of you play a card, your opponent plays a better one, you play one that is better yet, and so on. There doesn't seem to be any dice rolling or anything like that, it's basically a guessing game. Since I have no intention of taking up this game, there's really no reason for me to watch.
