This second season of Blue Exorcist continues following the events of episode 16 of the original anime, disregarding the anime-only events made of the later seasons and bringing the anime back in line with the manga's storyline. Here, relations between Rin and his friends are strained after they learn about his demon origins and they eventually get entangled in a plot where the eyes of a massive demon called the Impure King are stolen to aid in its resurrection. While Rin is still difficult for me to care for on occasion due to his typical shounen character type, this season does serve as a major source of development for his character as he finds himself struggling to come to terms with his demon origins following the events of the first series and the conflict with the Impure King leads him to have to consider how to think of himself while trying to aid his friends. Other supporting characters like Yukio and Shiemi also undergo their developments throughout the conflict related to Yukio and their self-worth. This character development flows pretty solidly with the anime's plot developments as the Impure King's resurrection unfolds and more of the motives of the enemy threat come to light. Sadly though, the anime was still lacking a proper ending as Blue Exorcist is still ongoing as of the time I made this review. Still though, Kyoto Saga made for a solid continuation to Blue Exorcist with the character developments it had to offer and is worth checking out if you enjoyed the first Blue Exorcist series.
