This modern telling of the classic 1960s mecha anime explores the post-war era of 1950s Japan as boy detective Shotaro and others are caught up in a series of conflicts connected to the mech Tetsujin 28 and a number of experiments performed by Shotaro's father and other scientists who worked with him during the war. The first half of the series is mostly divided up into several series arcs where Shotaro comes at odds with scientists and criminals attempting to wreck havoc on Japan with enemy mechs or experiments. Much of the second half explores a crime syndicate attempting to wreck havoc on Japan and Shotaro coming to discover some facts about his father that may incriminate him as a spy. Basically, the gist of this series is some major characters within Tetsujin 28 and Japan as a whole coming to grips with the post-war era and the role that technology created from the war may have to aid or conflict with the country's prosperity. A few characters get some development in this area such as Shotaro trying to learn more about Tetsujin's role within the war and thief Kenji Murasame bearing hatred for the mech due to his brother's murder. There is solid drama and suspense coming from the ongoing plots and conflicts throughout Tetsujin 28, though many still felt a bit underdeveloped and the series still has some trappings of the "mecha of the day" plot setup. Still if mech titles grab your interest, the 2004 Tetsujin 28 anime is still a solid recommendation you should at least check out once.
