Continuing where its first season left off, this second season of Food Wars has the majority of its run focused on the Autumn Elections where Souma and seven of the other students are in a cooking competition against one another. The season serves to highlight the growth of a number of its prominent characters and also showing some others areas of which they still have to improve in with their cooking, as well as retaining the first season's trademark "foodgasm" scenes with the exaggerated reactions characters have to tasting prepared meals. Outside of the Autumn Elections, the series also focuses on a sort of training arc called the Stagiaire that focuses on some of the characters, mainly Souma, learning more elements of the culinary field they never thought of from their prior experiences. Like the prior season, Food Wars offers a solid balance of comedy and character development in its plotting as it knows when to get goofy with its characters and having its serious and poignant moments to balance things out. Overall, Food Wars: Second Plate makes for a solid continuation of the Food Wars franchise as it continues developing its cast while retaining the anime's trademark comedy involving its absurd seriousness on cooking.
