(Buy-/ Rent+) Napping Princess' plot can be a little hard to get into if you are going into the film assuming that it will be your typical family movie. The film is focused on a high school girl named Kokone who find herself going on an unexpected adventure between both reality and a fantasy-based world named Heartland whenever she sleeps as she takes on the guise of a princess named Ancien who is in possession of a magical tablet computer that can bring machines to life. Due to the unique premise of this film, Napping Princess switches between reality and Heartland at points to advance its plot and explore more elements to its story. The fleshing out is relevant here as the film gradually reveals more about Kokone's family life that she was not privy to and reveals more about the motives of the mysterious enemy agents that seek Kokone and her father out between both reality and Heartland. In spite of how confusing its narrative style is and the run time of its movie format, Napping Princess does do a great job for the most part with exploring the world of Heartland and fleshing out its cast, especially in the themes it presents with coming to terms with the past and growing up into adulthood. Still as the intended audience for Napping Princess is for the whole family, this film may not be for everyone due to its complexity. Still if you are looking for a unique viewing experience that hits the right emotional notes with its themes, Napping Princess makes for an engaging film thanks to its unique gimmick with Kokone's adventure within two different worlds.
