Those used to the brilliant writing that has come out of Mamoru Hosoda's recent films like Summer Wars and Ōkami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki may be disappointed with his latest work on The Boy and the Beast. Focused on the interactions between runaway boy Ren and the bear spirit Kumatetsu, Boy and the Beast attempts to explore a son/ father type bond that the two establish from the loneliness that both have in their lives with Ren integrating himself into Kumatetsu's world and Kumatetsu coming to see the boy as a sort of surrogate son. However, the movie suffers from being unable to establish a clear narrative balance and not doing too well at believably making Ren and Kumatetsu's relationship a legitimately caring one for this reviewer. The film's narrative often lacks a clear focus as it focuses on several different plot threads throughout its run with establishing Ren and Kumatetsu's relationship, Kumatetsu's struggle to become his realm's successor, Ren struggling to find what world he wishes to be a part of later in the film, and making out parallels between Ren and another character introduced later in the film. While these would be solid developments of exploration in their own right during the film, the multiple plot threads felt disjointed and are often not smoothly integrated into the plot development of the film. Also, I was not convinced of the movie's attempts to paint a sort of familial bond between Ren and Kumatetsu since many interactions between the two involve them arguing and fighting among one another with both of their impulsive personalities. The visuals are still the standard high-quality to be expected of Hosoda's past films with gorgeous scenery, Hosoda's typical character design style and consistently fluid movement throughout the film's run with a fair number of engaging action scenes. Still with its plotting issues and failure to create a convincing theme like past Mamoru Hosoda films, Boy and the Beast stands as the weakest film he has put together to date in terms of quality.
