During the Prohibition era, in the Lawless district the law has no power, the mafia rule the streets, and the illegally made liquor flows freely. At one time Avilio lived in this district, but after a mafia dispute ended in the murder of his family, he went into hiding. Later, Avilio receives a letter from a mysterious person that ignites his passion for revenge and leads him to return to Lawless. There, he infiltrates the Vanetti family and gets close to Nero.

Focused on a young man's plot of revenge against a Mafia family in Prohibition-era America, 91 Days will have some tracing some parallels to Baccano! in focusing on the criminal underworld in the Prohibition era. But whereas Baccano is more light-hearted in its mood and has fantasy elements within its story, 91 Days is more darker with its mood being comparable to American crime movies like The Godfather and being more focused on the pitfalls of being consumed by revenge. The thoughts of revenge are seen through Avilro's time with the Vanetti family as he manipulates them and others to slowly dispatch members of the crime family, coming at the expense of his morality as he is too consumed by the desire to take out the crime family unlike others within it who show some degree of remorse for the crimes they take part in and eventually becoming conflicted with his plans as he befriends the family's son Nero. Outside of exploring Avilro's interactions with the Vanetti family, other crime families get their focus as the Vanettis are at war with others over control and influence over the local bootlegging ring and criminal activity within the town. Overall, an engaging historical crime drama exploring the cost of revenge with Avrilo's plans and is among one of the top titles I've seen in 2016 thus far.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3226#628]
(One episode watched):

The moment I saw the illustration above, long before I had watched episode one, I had a bad feeling about this show. The style (and what the characters are doing) seems typical of an anime workshop that cranks out shows which have plentiful action and violence (and artwork that is actually pretty good) but almost always lack plots and characters that interest me. The violence could get pretty graphic in this show, but it seemed like the violence was what the show was all about and telling a story was a secondary concern. The bad guys have no motivations other than being evil; we know them because they are ugly and do sadistic, reprehensible things. The show effectively makes us revile them, which means we get a bit of a thrill when they get what they deserve. But it's candy rather than a well-balanced meal. And even the protagonist, Avilio, has virtually no personality at the end of the episode. About all we know is that his family was murdered, which seems to give him a right to revenge. The insane look that he shows at one point makes even him a person I wouldn't want to associate with. It all seems nihilistic and disturbing to me, and I can't care what happens to the people on either side. I guess the critical first test which the opening episode of a new anime has to pass is whether or not it leaves me wanting to know what the answer to one or more questions that have been raised will be, and here about the only question is whether Avilio will get his revenge or not. I doubt if there will be much more than a steady stream of violent incidents as he fights his way to the top boss, and kills him in the final episode--much like a video game. I don't really care, and as a result, I think I will steer clear of 91 Days.
