Renowned exorcist Benio Adashino is summoned to Tokyo to deal with a problem regarding evil spirits known as Kegare. Rumor has it that there is one exorcist even better than her, however. This person turns out to be Rokuro Enmadou--except at the moment he is deeply disillusioned with exorcism after a battle with Kegare which killed several close friends of his.

Well, maybe the reason why episode one of Sousei no Onmyouji didn't thrill me was because it didn't explain the basic premise of the series well enough. When I read the synopsis at ANN, I was surprised to learn of several important elements which haven't been mentioned yet--like Benio and Rokoro, who initially rub each other the wrong way, are destined to marry someday. SnO initially struck me as an attempt at an exorcism comedy (if such a thing is possible); after watching an episode, it seems more accurate to describe it as an exorcism action series with jokes in a supporting, subsidiary role. The problem is that, as is all too common, the jokes just aren't very good; if I want to laugh, I could do much better by watching an average episode of Stephen Colbert. Another problem is that exorcism doesn't excite me. Kegare or evil spirits or whatever are ugly and frightening, but they have no motivation, no cause, and are therefore uninteresting. An even more serious problem is that the human characters aren't particularly interesting either. This show might have been more interesting if it hadn't been trying to be so goofy. Why in the world was valuable airtime used on a lame candy store gag when Benio and Rokugo might have had an engaging conversation which would have enlightened us about the two of them? Experience has shown me that characters that don't seem interesting from the moment I meet them probably never will be. The show just seemed kind of over-the-top, as if it was desperately trying to shove action and comedy down my throat. Maybe it couldn't make up it's mind whether it wanted to be an action or a comedy anime. I was left thoroughly unimpressed and did not watch any additional episodes--and the fact that ANN lists no less than fifty of them reassures me that I made the right call.
