12-sai ~Chicchana Mune no Tokimeki~
(One episode watched):
When I started watching this show, the character designs reminded me so strongly of the semi-classic Kodomo no Omocha that I wondered if it might have been another work by the same mangaka, and maybe wasn't a Spring 2016 series at all but instead was a fansub of an old series which had happened to be released at this time. It is a new 2016 anime after all. This show struck me as good but not great; the character designs had the unfortunate effect of causing me to compare 12-sai to KnO, which I remember had a gift for grabbing the viewer's attention and keeping him/her thoroughly interested, in part due to odd but not unbelievable quirks in the characters. Here, I was satisfied but can't really say I felt nearly as engaged. A romance seems to be building between Hanabi and Takao, a guy in her class, and the previews suggest that another romance will unfold in episode two between two other 12 year old kids. Perhaps the two romances will develop in parallel. But kids coming to terms with their maturing bodies and urges doesn't intrigue me much, and comedy plays a small part (unlike KnO). I can identify and sympathize with Hanabi and Takao, but not a lot. I'm sure this will be an OK show, but I don't think I will watch it myself.
