Rainbow Days plays out as a slice-of-life romantic comedy focused on a group of high school boys who often mingle in the romantic affairs of one another, the main focus of which being Natsuki's crush on Anna. In spite of each episode being only about 10 minutes long, there is enough going on in each episode to depict gradual developments in the character relationships and getting some comedy off the chemistry between characters that is sometimes funny and other times serious. For the most part, characters were likeable with the exception of Mari's obnoxious and single-minded interest in Anna. This is nothing groundbreaking, but is worth a look if your like high school slice-of-life comedies that have a little more to them than just milking off the quirks of the characters.

This show seemed to be more about humor than romance, which excused all the thoroughly unlikely coincidences that kept taking place. As usual, it wasn't LOL funny, but was OK. I thought early on that it would be largely about the romance between one main character and a certain girl, but after a couple episodes that particular thread seems to have faded away and episode five had nothing to do with it. That's a disappointment, because like the vast majority of recent anime comedies Nijiiro Days isn't funny enough to be worth watching just for the jokes (I don't recall laughing at all during episode five, except maybe once at the end), and therefore needs an ongoing and interesting story as well; but the signs are that it won't have one. Episodes of this show are about half as long as those of an average 23-minute series--and I find that I like that, because while watching I grow tired of this show pretty quickly. This is a show which I sort of pity, because it never offended me and seemed to have considerable potential at one point, but seems determined to remain shallow and unremarkable. I ultimately decided that it was not worth my time--which seems to have been the correct choice, since it turned out to be a two-season show. Last updated Wednesday, February 15 2017.
