Shōyō Hinata began playing volleyball after seeing the "small giants" who played the sport when he was in elementary school. He suffers a crushing defeat in his first and last tournament in middle school at the hands of his rival Tobio Kageyama. So, Hinata joins Kurasuno High School's volleyball team, vowing revenge against Kageyama. However, Kageyama is also on Kurasuno's team. The former rivals form a legendary combo with Hinata's mobility and Kageyama's precision ball-handling. Together, they take on the local tournaments and vow to meet Kurasuno's fated rival school in the nationals.

For its premise, Haikyu is as simple as you can get as it focuses on a dysfunctional team of high school volleyball players who have to learn to coexist as they train for and prepare for the country's seasonal volleyball tournament. While the characters mostly have simple character types to follow, the developing cohesion between team members drives the story of the series as the members of Kurasano's volleyball team learn to value the teamwork they develop and implement the key skills they contribute for the team to help further their training and advancing in the national tournament. Much of the show's first half focuses on Kurasano learning to get along with one another, while the second half features them taking part in the tournament. The matches are genuinely suspenseful as Kurasano and their opposition compete against one another throughout the tournament, with all the matches being quite competitive and the Kurasano team cohesion gradually improving throughout the tournament. The series does have its bumps between many comedy moments that I was indifferent towards, some overdone drama and my lack of interest in the title's heavy focus on Sho and Tobio's developing chemistry. But still, Haikyu is a simple and solid sports title worth a look if you are interested in a series focused around high school volleyball.
