Gauche is a young man who lives in a small house outside of town and plays the cello in the local orchestra. Unfortunately, Gauche's playing is letting down the rest of the orchestra and the conductor is running out of patience with him. Over the next few nights, however, Gauche is visited in his home by a succession of animals with musical requests for him - a cat, a bird, a raccoon dog and a mouse - much to Gauche's annoyance. What Gauche doesn't realize is that these tasks and encounters are teaching him how to overcome the flaws in his playing in the last few days before the big concert.

Serohiki no Goshu
Having enjoyed prior exposure to an adapted work of Kenji Miyazawa in the form of Night on the Galactic Railroad, I chose to track down Gauche the Cellist. Outside of its connection to the famous Japanese children's novelist, this baby is notable for also being one of the earlier works directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata before the studio's formation. The moral that Gauche the Cellist is a rather simple one with learning to develop patience and care to better oneself for something that one has a passion for. In this case, Gauche learning how to better play the cello as he improves his playing through the animals that visit him each night and adjusting to their presence as he understands what the encounters are doing for his cello playing. The animation style is rather dated and doesn't appear to have had a high budget in mind, but looks good for the time it was made without any kind of noticeable shortcuts or errors. The instrumental pieces all consist of classical musical pieces that are pleasant to listen to and flow nicely with the movie's intended moral. Overall, Gauche the Cellist is a decent 80s animated film worth tracking down if you have interest in older anime titles.
