Even though this 1985 classic film was meant to be geared for children, Night on the Galactic Railroad made for a relaxing and engaging watch for me despite its age and somewhat touchy subject matter that develops in its second half. This animated take on Kenji Miyazawa's classic work apparently makes many of its characters into anthropomorphic cats in its focus on Giovanni and Campanella's ride on a mysterious train traveling through symbolic representations of different constellations and religious locales as they interact with some of the train's riders. The film is rather simple in its story, focusing on how Giovanni goes about his everyday life and eventually going on the Galactic Railroad with Campanella and exploring some of the train stops they make. Much of the film's pacing is quite slow thanks to its exploration of the differing stops that the railroad makes on the journey of Giovanni and Campanella and fleshing out the former's character, which clearly makes this a film not for everyone. But if this is of little concern to you, then the various sights are quite pleasant on the eyes such as an endless corn field and a fossil excavation mixed with walnuts, an excellent time for those just chilling out with this movie. The touchy subject that is focused on in Night of the Galactic Railroad's second half comes across subtly and serves as the major plot twist for its finale and the coming-of-age element for Giovanni's character. The movie's soundtrack is also worth mention as its haunting and tense tracks are great at enhancing the mystery of the events and sights experienced throughout this work. If you don't mind the film's age and slow pacing, then Night of the Galactic Railroad makes for a worthwhile watch with its simple story elements and interesting visual sights under the watch of two young cats having differing experiences they will undergo in their night of travels.
