Whenever there's a show which goes by a title like this one, I must watch episode one in hope that it will be a clever, risqué, and fun work. Of course I know that there's about a 95% chance that it will in fact be a cheap, sleazy project in which animated porn substitutes for any sort of talent. With Bikini Warriors, for once I was pleasantly surprised. Some effort really had been put into the writing, of both the very short story and the jokes behind it. For all their buxom-ness, these seem more like girls with minds than mindless girls with hot bodies. The banter between them was fun; it's the talk that holds my attention, not the bouncing boobs. They are not geniuses, but they are not airheads either. The very notion that for some reason four fighting girls who hold the fate of the world on their shoulders must dress in bikinis is absurd and amusing. It sort of reminds me of Queen's Blade. The synopsis above is largely news to me even after watching the first episode, which was less than five minutes long. But for once this seems like a fun show which I will gladly watch.

Episode two, in which the girls argue about what they are being paid to do a very important job, was fun as well. Make no mistake, there are plenty of crotch shots and bouncing boobs, but I don't mind nearly as much when some definite talent was clearly involved in the making of the anime. A certain amount of suggestive stuff is even necessary to support the premise of this show, namely a cross between sword & sorcery fantasy and fanservice. Perhaps the reason why I don't mind too much is that the girls aren't being treated as nothing more than a place for a man to store his you-know-what. In episode two, for example, they were trying to be reasonable while the King who had hired them was being completely unreasonable.

Perhaps this show is half crotch and boob shots which make me uncomfortable and half clever comedy with likeable characters. The episode about how things went when Dark Elf first joined the team was great (she was rather high-and-mighty at the time). Likewise the one where two new girls are interviewed as possible new team members. The ecchi close-ups demean this show which is good enough to stand on its own two feet without resorting to such cheap tricks. I wish there had been a longterm story of sorts rather than just the episodic gags. In a way there is, as we get to know the girls better, by seeing how they react to different situations. Maybe there will still be a climax of some sort.

I'm sure I have said this before, but really, the flagrant and vulgar fanservice is a shame, because this was a funny show which is only demeaned by it. In the final episode about every stereotypical event in sword & sorcery anime takes place in rapid succession, as we see how the girls' quest finally works out. This is a show well worth watching twice--which is what I'm currently doing.
