My Love Story focuses on the relationship developments between the big and intimidating Takeo and the beauty Rinko, whom Takeo saves from a molester aboard a train. Like Kare Kano, My Love Story sticks out from many romance anime in that rather than build up to our main couple eventually confessing to one another and starting up their relationship by late in the show's run, the couple confess and start up their relationship early in the series thus focus is then devoted to exploring the developments in their relationship. The series takes its time in slowly developing our main couple's relationship that include going to the beach together for the first time, their first kiss, and the first test in commitment to their relationship. While it is admirable that My Love Story's premise sticks out quite prominently for a romance title, it does have a major flaw for me in the fact that the individuals making our main relationship don't have much going for them in the way of depth. Takeo is your archetypal imposing male lead in terms of appearance while having a sweeter side, and Rinko is not much better beyond being your beautiful and kind female lead. As there is not much to the couple in regards to personality and depth, this made it hard for me to care much for their relationship developments in spite of its premise sticking out from the norm for your typical romance title. The remaining characters in the series are not better in this regard as many of them also follow archetypes typical of high school themed anime and had little for me to grab my interest for them. The visuals to the series stick out prominently with its beautiful scenic shots, bright and vivid color, and well-detailed character and object designs. Food admirers might find themselves foaming from the mouth in seeing the nicely drawn cakes and pastries that are often made by Rinko whenever she meets up with Takeo, adding further to the great presentation of this series. Still in spite of its visuals and somewhat fresh premise, My Love Story is a tricky series for me to want to recommend. Our main couple doesn't get much in the way of fleshing out and the so-called pureness of their relationship felt a bit saccharine for me at a number of points throughout the show's run. While it is considered one of 2015's top titles by anime fans, your mileage may vary with how well you perceive it. Last updated Saturday, February 18 2017. (Two episodes watched): Here's a romantic comedy (but it looks like 'romance' will have priority) with a sort of Prince and Pauper theme: Gouda would like a girlfriend but has no idea how to get one, while Makoto is so suave that he could choose virtually any girl he wanted and she would gladly accept, except that he's not interested in romance. Ore Monogatari struck me as an honest (there is little or no fanservice), fairly clever show. But I'm not sure if I'm in the mood for romance at the moment, and if I am, this show may not have quite everything I need to be truly entertained. The jokes are not all that funny, and I was impatient during episode two for the story to move forward more rapidly. Maybe the premise isn't novel enough, in spite of the 'Frankenstein looking for romance' concept. Anyway, I may or may not watch the rest of this show.
