Basically, Kawai Complex mixes rom-com and slice of life with its attempts of comedy as Usa's attempts to earn Ritsu's affections often get sabotaged through his obnoxious roommates or Ritsu pummeling him from getting in some sort of compromising predicament. Usa isn't the only one victim to being series butt monkey as several of the residents also find themselves at the receiving end of one another at varying points in the series. The anime shows some gradual developments with Usa and Ritsu's bond, though I could care less for them as a pairing thanks to Usa being the resident butt monkey of the series and Ritsu continuing to slip back into aloof mask after she expresses a sudden positive emotion. Not to mention the obnoxious quirks of the other manor residents made me further indifferent to the show's antics. Unless you're a diehard fan of rom-coms or slice-of-life comedies, this is rather forgettable fare.

Maison Ikkoku-like sidekicks are what kept me from consistently watching this series, but now trying episode 4 (and finding it completely focused on the three leads) makes this anime appear a lot closer to Suzuka than I expected. Perhaps I'll try and restart this one from episode 1.

I had high hopes for this show; the premise seemed clever and tailor-made for both romance and comedy. It reminded me of the classic Maison Ikkoku. But to my dismay, the characters seem hollow and more annoying than endearing. I didn't feel any sophisticated character vibe; instead, each of them is basically a joke, each with a distinctive strange trait (the masochistic pervert, the politely domineering manager, the alcoholic girl, etc), but those are hardly novel and they suggest that the characters are unlikely to develop much or become interesting. Usa has yet to grow enough personality for me to care how his love life goes; and the jokes are distinctly unfunny, so what is there to watch for? A lot of effort was put into the artwork, at least. But that seems like a waste when the remainder of the show is as uninspiring as was the case here. Maison Ikkoku was infinitely better. I thought about watching another episode, but ultimately felt no enthusiasm whatsoever for that option and discarded this series altogether. Last updated Tuesday, September 09 2014.
