An animated adaptation of Murasaki Shikibu's eleventh century epic Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), which is considered by many to be the world's first novel. The film follows the life and many loves of Genji, the Shining Prince, and his love-life is as fraught with tragedy and heartbreak as it is with passion and romance.

My previous exposure to an animated take on the classic Japanese tale involving Hikaru Genji's romantic affairs came from the 2009 Noitamina take, Genji Monogatari Sennenki. This 1980s film adaptation is a bit more condensed in its depiction on Genji's romancing and has a drawing style almost like Ukiyo-e paintings. The style gives character designs a more lifelike appearance, though details are a bit on the simple side and the animation is mostly minimal. The traditional musical pieces that accompany the movie are a great fit with with their haunting and dramatic moods.

The film does well in making Genji's character a believable one in showing how while his intentions with loving the many women he met up with are ideal from his point-of-view as he does treat them kindly, he fails to comprehend these actions negatively affect the women he loves due to his lack of commitment to just one of them. However, the quality of the movie's storytelling suffers to a great extent in that its limited run time prevents the excellent amount of fleshing out that the later 2009 TV anime adaptation of Genji gave to the characters and some parts of the movie feature long, drawn out shots of scenery and Genji's reflections that cause the movie to unnecessarily drag.

If you're a fan of historical-based and older anime, this film adaptation of Tale of Genji series may appeal to you. But if you are looking for a more fleshed out adaptation of novel, you might be better off trying to track down the 2009 TV anime adaptation.
